Washington Examiner: Scandal-plagued Mississippi GOP Rep. Steven Palazzo forced into runoff election

Scandal-plagued Rep. Steven Palazzo (R-MS) has been forced into a runoff election amid a campaign finance investigation.


Palazzo faced a crowded field of primary challengers in the 4th Congressional District after facing allegations he misused campaign funds. 


A 2021 Office of Congressional Ethics report said there was “substantial reason to believe” Palazzo “converted funds to personal use.” Palazzo claimed the allegations were politically motivated. 


Mississippi requires a candidate to win a majority rather than a plurality in order to be the outright winner of a primary; without a majority, the top two vote-getters head to a runoff election. A crowded field of candidates may have otherwise split an anti-incumbent vote in Palazzo’s favor. 


Palazzo will go on to face state Sen. Brice Wiggins or Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell in the runoff election. The state has scheduled its runoff for June 28.


Palazzo’s rivals hit the longtime lawmaker not just for the ethics investigation, but for skipping candidate forums in the 4th District, which covers the southeastern region of the state between Louisiana and Alabama.

Congressman Mike Ezell announced he is running for re-election in 2024. First elected in 2022, Ezell pulled in a whopping 73 percent of the votes. He then traded in his sheriff’s badge and uniform for a suit and tie with an American flag pin. He is serving on the Homeland Security Committee and Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. If re-elected, Ezell hopes to work with other congress members like Alabama Congressman Jerry Carl and Georgia Congressman Drew Ferguson, who both endorsed him. Ezell is excited for the opportunity to continue serving his constituents if he wins re-election. “It’s a wonderful thing to be a member of Congress. It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to work for the people and to serve the people. And I will continue to do that as long as I’m in Congress, and I’ve always done that as a law enforcement officer and a sheriff. And I’ll continue to do that. We’re all about service.
